MAQUET HL40 Heart Lung Machine
The heart-lung machine (also called a cardiopulmonary bypass machine) takes over the function of the heart and lungs by replacing the heart's pumping action with roller and centrifugal pumps and by adding oxygen to the blood via a oxygen membrane cartridge. This allows the heart to be still for an operation, which is necessary when the heart has to be opened (open heart surgery). The MAQUET HL40 was designed to be the newest and most advanced system in MAQUET’s 30 year history with manufacturing the worlds leading Heart Lung Machines.
Full scale non functional mockups
Built at MAQUET’s manufacturing facility in Rastatt Germany to test both functionality and manufacturing methods. Throughout the design process the close collaboration between the design and manufacturing teams enabled quick iterations to meet design and usability requirements along with a vision for production.
Cable, tubing and accessory management
Keeping the potential mess of cables and tubing at bay is a constant issue for perfusionists. Numerous concepts for accessory holders (temperature, bubble, blood level and pressure sensors) and cable and tube management were developed and refined with the input of perfusionists.
Simulated OR testing
Semi functional mock ups were developed and reviewed in a test OR setting with perfusionists. The mockups simulated the users work flow with an accurate representation of the UI, hardware, materials, size and weight.
